I just bought their new album "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending". Very Beatlesque!

It couldn't be any bigger a ripoff than the Walrusesque "Sowing the
Seeds of Love", which one clever radio station mocked with a version
called "Stealing the Beatles Songs" (I believe these were also the
guys that did "Gender Changing" to the music of "My Generation", right
down to the stutter, mocking Pete Townsend's admission as to sexual
preferences).

"Sowing The Seeds of Love" was certainly an admitted homage to The
Beatles, but when it came out, hair metal bands ruled and that song
was a darn refreshing alternative to what else was on the radio back
then.

If you listen to the interviews with TFF on the "iTunes Originals"
album, they talk about specifically wanted to emulate The Beatles on
the new album. But the new album is not nearly as Rutle-esque as the
song "Sowing The Seeds of Love." In fact, I think most people here
would really like it. It's Beatle-influenced without referencing
anything specific. And if you like late period XTC (Skylarking,
Apple Venus), you'll probably like this album.

Yeah. It's just that Tears For Fears were more influential...

But seriously, wasn't Sowing the last particular chart hit song that
got that Beatle tag in a big way? As opposed to bands like Oasis
getting it in general - the last specific songs that got press for
their extreme Beatality as I recall were Sowing and D-squared's Please
Please Tell Me Now (Is There Something I Should Know), not long after
the 70s ones like Klaatu's Calling Occupants and stuff like that...

I listened to Sowing again today, and I still don't have a clue why it
was tagged Beatles, or anything else but an excellent song from TFF.

Sowing kicks ass, regardless who it was influenced by. Neither John,
Paul, Ringo or George wrote it. Tears for Fears did, and produced a
masterful song of their own accord.

clearly patterened after "Come Together."

But it's still a cool album.

Thanks for the notice. I love TFF's stuff, except for their last
album, "Saturnine..." which I could not get into. Their best work, in
my opinion is the "Elemental" album, but "Seeds of Love" is also
great.
I think they sometimes sound Beatlesesque, but they are certainly not
a one-trick band ripping off the Beatles. They have their own sound,
and are quite different than the Beatles on most songs.

I haven't heard this new one, but will get it. Even though I'm a fan,
I was a bit hesitant to get it after not liking their last release.
But now I will. Thanks for the recommendation!

p.s. Do you know they - or at least one of them - also went through
Primal Therapy as did John Lennon and Yoko Ono? Their first album has
several songs about the PT experience.

Thanks for the notice. I love TFF's stuff, except for their last
album, "Saturnine..." which I could not get into.

Saturnine Martial & Lunatic a b-sides & rarities compilation that came out
in 96
is best appreciated by hard-core fans rather then the casual listener.
I like it but it's not often I will listen from start to finish as instead
I skip to a few gems I like on there.
Roland and Curt admit to Fab4 influence and Roland recently said The Seeds
of Love
was Lennon based and the new one Everybody Loves A Happy Ending is more
McCartney and as Orzabal explained because McCartney is the new Lennon.
It was said with a tone of humor.
I've been listening to the new album since March and I think it's great
and while there is an admited Beatle influence Tears For Fears has turned
it into their own unique sound !!

"Sowing the Seeds", whether or not Beatlesque (and I think it's much more
Charlatans UK-esque) is a great piece of songwriting if you don't mind TFF's
polemical lyrical bent (although you have to overlook that with Andy Partridge
as well).

But it's not even close to the best song on that album -- "Woman in Chains" and
"Bad Man's Song" are both at the masterpiece level. While not in the same
league as these three, TFF also did a great job with "Advice for the Young at
Heart."

I personally thought Elemental was a *big* step down from the levels they'd
achieved on "Big Chair" and "Seeds." Have not heard the new one yet.

achieved on "Big Chair" and "Seeds."

Here, I have to diagree. I thought "Elemental" was their best album,
bar none! I like every song on it, whereas their previous albums
always had a few stinkers on them, even "Seeds of Love". Where I think
they went downhill was "Raoul and the Kings of Spain", although I see
there are many fans of this cd at amazon.com... so maybe I need to
listen to it again; and you need to listen to "Elemental" again...

Have not heard the new one yet.

I am listening to it right now, for the first time, and it is great.
Not sure how great yet, but great! They did use the "Come Together"
drum beat on 'Who Killed Tangerine"! Overall, to me, it does not sound
Beatles-esque, although I can see that some will say that, and maybe
they even intended it to be, I don't know. I always felt that their
music had some hard-to-define Beatles-like quality to it, yet did not
"sound like" the Beatles. I hear the same thing, here. I think they
use orchestration and layers of instruments in a similar way as the
later Beatles did, but they have their own "sound".
