I'm the keeper of the bees
Surveyor of the swarms
Absorbed in apiaries
Hive-frames that I have formed

Honey heals when I'm high-strung
Heady mood-enhancer
Stay away or you'll be stung
I am the beekeeper

I'm the keeper of the bees
I've held them in my hands
I know their anatomies
From forewings to wax-glands

I have found them fossilized
Embedded in amber
Over time they've hybridized
I am the beekeeper

I'm the keeper of the bees
Only the females sting
I strive to keep them appeased
With flowery off'rings

Poppies furnish fine pollen
Nasturtium, nice nectar
Awaiting the winged ones
I am the beekeeper

I'm the keeper of the bees
Queens float their pheromones
Others face final duties:
There's love -- then death -- for drones

Swampwater impairs and warps
The coverts I confer
Once I came across a corpse
I am the beekeeper

I'm the keeper of the bees
In winter I withdraw
They descend to dormancy
Think other things till thaw

Honeybees, social insects
I admire their order
Reclusive, misanthropic
I am the beekeeper
